The letters are lovely and become more loving as time goes by. An excellent explination of what England was like during and after WWII. The Trip to Echo Spring

On Writers and Drinking

Olivia Laing

Picador 2014

The question I asked myself, why do so many writers drink? Why do I drink?

Survivors should not use alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant; chronic drinking may cause a downward spiral in mood which if untreated can lead to suicide. Survivors who have not faced the reality of their past have various coping skills some of which like alcohol are dangerous. Trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and self-blame survivors lean heavily on short-term solutions to their long-term problem.

Olivia Laing examined the link between creativity and alcohol through the work and lives of six extraordinary men; F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, John Berryman, John Cheever, and Raymond Carver. All six writers were alcoholics, the subject of drinking winds its way through some of their finest works.

Olivia Laing grew up in an alcoholic family. One spring she decided to explore the use of alcohol in the lives of those six writers. She took a journey by train to the locations those writers lived and worked. Laing recorded the devastating effect alcohol had on the writers and the people around them. In her journey Laing discovered not only the horror of alcohol addiction, but the possibility of recovery.

How did the conscious mind develop in the primitive brain?

JULIAN JAYNES

THE ORIGIN OF CONSCIOUSNES

IN THE BREAKDOWN OF THE

BICAMERAL MIND

"O, What a world of unseen visions and heard silences, this insubstantial country of the mind! What ineffable essences, these touchless rememberings and unshowable reveries! And the privacy of it all! A secret theater of speechless monologue and prevenient counsel, an invisible mansion of all moods, musings, and mysteries, and infinite resort of disappointments and discoveries. A whole kingdom where each of us reigns reclusively alone, questioning what we will, commanding what we can. A hidden hermitage where we study out the troubled book of what we have done and yet may do. An introcosm that is more myself than anything I can find in a mirror. This consciousness that is myself of selves, that is everything, yet nothing at all - what is it? And where did it come from? And why?"     Julian Jaynes

You may wish to understand your mind in order to make sense of the chaos you are experiencing trying to effect a recovery from the abuse you sustained as a child. Your mind brain combination was altered by the constant exposure to that abuse. Now you are left with a legacy of disfunctional thinking that only survivors can understand.

Here is another read which may help you understand how your conciousness was affected by your abuse.

Journey to the Centers of the Mind

Toward A Science Of Consciousness

Susan A. Greenfield

"Our secret inner world, our consciousness, is the ultimate enigma of the brain and the most baffling problem that that same brain will ever ask itself about itself."   Susan A. Greenfield

The World around us

The Rational Optimist

How Prosperity Evolves

Matt Ridley

A must read for those with an open mind. The world is not coming to an end, on the contrary, the innate ability humans possess to creatively solve problems by working together will overcome any threats to human survival. It is more popular to be pessimistic about the future and to call for an end to the world than to allow the the natural course of change to bring about a new order. The systems of science and education are biased to supress the change that fresh thinking and new ideas bring to us daily.
